Case Studies > Case Study #13 - Otolaryngologists

Challenge: Device manufacturer wished to understand otolaryngologists’ awareness and attitudes towards arthroscopic coblation devices and RF wands.

Solution: One-on-one in-depth interviews with otolaryngologists were conducted. Respondents indicated what they liked and disliked about their current choices for arthroscopic shavers and RF wands. They were then presented with the concept of a combination wand/RF device, and their reactions were solicited.

Result: Otolaryngologists are constantly seeking improvements in arthroscopic surgical technique and instrumentation. Participants in this study felt that the next step in improving arthroscopy would be a combination shaver/RF wand. The otolaryngologists participating in this study were very open to evaluating a combination product. The convenience of rapid coagulation without moving instruments in and out of a cannula (or in some cases no cannula) was very attractive to them.
